Located within the walls of São João Baptista Castle, the Church of São João Baptista was commissioned by King D. João IV in 1645. With a baroque façade, columned doorway and two impressive bell towers, it was the first monument erected in commemoration of the restoration of independence in Portugal, wrested from the Spanish crown in 1640 by means of the battle of Aljubarrota. The hermitage was almost abandoned during the Civil War between Peter IV of Portugal and Miguel I of Portugal. It was in this hermitage that the tradition of carrying a statue of St John the Baptist through the town was initiated.
