Construction of this church began in 1696. It has a notable baroque façade and a richly adorned interior, featuring a magnificent gilded wood-carved main altar. This is one of the most precious relicts of religious art in the Azores. The beautiful azulejos panels complement a splendid coffered ceiling. The church once housed Sacred Art Museum, but after an earthquake in 1998, the museum had to be closed. Some of the religious figures from the 15th to the 19th century can be seen in the town museum.
