The Convento de Santo António was founded here in 1463 for the Infant Fernando, brother of King Afonso V, before being relocated in 1502 by King Manuel I. The church has cylindrical buttresses tapering off into cones. The convent is entered through a gothic gateway. Inside, the main chapel deserves particular attention with a beautiful vault with its clasps embellished with the arms of Manuel and covered in 17th century polychrome tiles. The extremely small cloisters are charming. In the Chapel of St. Francis, 18th century blue and white tiles depict the saint´s life story.
