The Igreja de São Francisco is a church dating back to the 13th century. Built in the Gothic style, this impressive structure with its ornately carved marble façade is the convent where King Pedro I died. In his will he bequeathed his heart to the care of the convent (his tortured heart was the actual wording). Queen Isabel of Aragon, who came here with King Dinis, stayed in the convent. The building occupies an entire side of the Largo dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra and should not be missed.
