The Church of São Boaventura, whose construction started in 1641 and continued for 100 years, is part of a 17th century Franciscan monastery. The building also served as a hospital after the monks had been driven out of Portugal. The church has a baroque façade. The interior’s main chancel shows the influence of Mexican-Spanish art. There is a particularly fine cedar wood ceiling with allegorical paintings, and a 16th century altarpiece representing the Annunciation. This is one of the most important monuments in Santa Cruz das Flores and should not be missed on a visit to the town.
