The Igreja de Sao Jorge is the parish church of Velas. Originally built in the 15th century, it has, as with so many of Sao Miguel’s religious buildings, gone through various restorations throughout the years. The church houses many statues which were transferred from the Franciscan Monastery which used to be in Velas. There are many aspects of note to this charming building, but of particular interest are the contrasting colours of basalt on the interior pillars of the three naves.
