The Church of Santo Cristo Misericórdias is situated in Santa Cruz. Originally built in the 16th century and dedicated to. Santo Cristo, it was badly damaged by fire in 1921 and had to be rebuilt. It is a high building with two naves separated with columns forming two churches with respective chapels, something very rare in the Azores. An image of the Perpetual Father exists in this church, the only one in the Azores. This image, according to tradition, appeared inside a coffin that floated in to the coast. No one knows where it originated.
