The Church of Santo Amaro dates back to the end of the 5th century and is a fine example of Paleo-Christian architecture. This is the main reason for it becoming home to the Beja Regional Museum’s Visigoth exhibition. The Núcleo Visigótico do Museu Regional has exhibits dating from the 5th to the 8th century and details the changes in architecture during the transition from Roman to Visigoth domination. The basilica was altered and added to in the 16th and 17th centuries, which accounts for the Gothic and Mannerist elements in its facade.
