The 18th century Igreja de Santiago is the Parish Church of Alcácer do Sal. Situated in lower Alcácer do Sal, the church is Baroque in outline and has a severely plain façade. The church interior is stunning, covered as it is in 18th century tiles (azuelos) telling the story of St James (Santiago). The Military Order of Santiago was established in the town in the 13th century and this church, although from a much later date, continues the tradition of venerating the saint.
