The Igreja de Santiago is the matriz, or parish church, of the Santiago do Cacém. A church of gothic origin, originating in the 13th century, it was modified in the 16th century in manueline style and substantially rebuilt following the great earthquake of 1755. Of the treasures on show, don’t miss the notable Reliquary of the Holy Cross which was donated by the Byzantine princess, Vetácia, and the gothic low relief which was donated to the church by Queen Isabel, who was later declared a saint.
