Above the town, the walls and the pleasant shady garden surrounding the castle are the setting for the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, which is a national monument. There is some doubt as to its date; some historians believe it is as early as the 12th century and the time of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. It was restored in the 16th century. There is a fine collection of paintings inside, including a 17th century panel of the Resurrection and a 16th century depiction of the Assumption in the chancel.
