Considered to be the largest church on the island of Pico, the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena was built in the 17th century. It was altered in the 19th century to incorporate the current façade decorated in the revivalist style of that period. It is worth going inside to admire the azulejo panels and the carved and gilded woodwork of the chancel and the votive images. On 22 July each year, the traditional Festival of St. Mary Magdalene is held here, which includes a procession and other religious ceremonies.
