The Convent of Santa Cara was situated outside the city walls and was built on the orders of King Afonso III in 1259; only the church remains today. Afonso’s illegitimate daughter, Leonor Afonso, took her vows as a nun here and her empty Gothic tomb is inside. Controversial restoration work carried out in the 1940s has, it is said, removed much of the interior decorative appeal of the church but enhanced its mendicant austerity. As an enclosed order there is no entrance portal but only a side door. The large Gothic rose-window at the north end is a notable feature.
