Above the old whaling factory in Lajes das Flores stands the most imposing historic building of the town, the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Rosário. This church was built in the second half of the 18th century and has been renovated several times since. Its sea-facing façade is covered with azuelo tiles and is dominated by two towers capped with cupolas. Notable in the interior are several 18th-century religious statues, some beautiful paintings and elaborate woodcarvings on the main altar as well as the lateral altars.
