Built to commemorate first settlers at the island of Faial, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Angústias has a silver antependium, displayed on the high altar, showing a representation of the first mass held on the beach. The coats of arms of the settlers’ families are depicted on the ceiling of the chancel. In the side chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, are the tombs of Josse Van Huertere, the first captain of the island of Faial and his wife, Dona Brites de Macedo. Erected in the 17th century on the foundations of a 15th-century chapel, it is the only church in town that turns its back to the sea.
