The church of Our Lady of Mercy was built between 1664 and 1677 by King of Afonso VI to celebrate Portugal’s victory at the battle of Ameixial, which took place on the 8th June 1663. This was during the Restoration War, which led to the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, whereby Spain recognized Portugal’s independence. Designed in the Mannerist style by João Nunes Tinoco, its floor plan is in the form of a Greek cross and typical of his work. The interior is decorated in the Baroque style and the octagonal cupola by Jácome Mendes from 1721 is worthy of note.
