The Igreja de Marvila dates from the 12th century and was built by the Knights Templar on the authority of Afonso Henriques. It was greatly altered in the 16th century and the intricately carved portal in Manueline style was added at this time. Amongst the most attractive features of this church are the fine ribbed vaulting to the chancel and the outstanding 17th century azulejos, which illustrate the various forms of this art. Also of note are the eleven miniature Corinthian columns supporting a stone altar and the baroque gilded wood altar.
