The Misericórdia is a charitable organisation founded by Brother Martinho de Molina in Santarém in 1502. In the early years it operated from the Jesus Christ hospital until, in 1559, the Dowager Queen Regent Caterina ordered a church to be built for them by the celebrated architect Miguel de Arruda. The façade of the church is in Baroque style having been rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. The late renaissance interior has an elegant ribbed vaulted ceiling and rural scene paintings on the columns by Sebastião Rodrigues and André de Morales.
