The church and adjoining hospital were built at the end of the 16th century, at the instigation of Bishop Afonso Castelo Branco, replacing the 15th century Espirito Santo (Holy Spirit) chapel and hospital. The only church in the Algarve built in the form of a Greek cross; it was extensively damaged in the earthquake of 1755. Bishop Francisco Gomes ordered the renovation of the facade according to a design by Italian architect, Francisco Xavier Fabri, who also designed the Arco da Vila. A triumphal arch, decorated with a profusion of rococo carving, is noteworthy, as is the fine collection of 18th century statuary.
