The castle ramparts enclose the former 14th century Misericórdia Church alongside the ruins of buildings destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, one of which was the Alcaide’s Palace. The church porch is renaissance in style and inside the building are two 17th century tombs. The Igreja da Misericórdia, dedicated to Sant’Iago (St John), houses a main altar with seven highly decorative wooden panels dating from the 17th century and a collection of 18th century statues.
