The Church of Misericórdia in Angra do Heroísmo is an important 18th-century building. Constructed on the site of a former 15th century church, which was dedicated to the Holy Spirit, it was the first hospital in the city. The church has a high, narrow, robust façade, with an arch topped by the Royal coat of arms. The interior includes the altars of the Holy Spirit and of Santo Cristo das Misericórdias. The interior is beautiful, with carved woodwork, statues and valuable religious paintings. It is also worth noting the 18th-century azulejo-tile panels that feature historical scenes.
