Considered one of the architectural highlights of Santarém and one of its finest buildings, the 14th century Igreja da Graça has a most impressive façade. The entrance has graceful archivolts with a typically Gothic ogee arch and a finely decorated frame over. Higher up is a spectacular rose window carved out of a single stone. The church contains the tomb of the discoverer of Brazil, Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467-1520), who is buried with his wife under a simple tombstone. This contrasts with the elaborate sarcophagus of the first governor of Ceuta, Pedro de Meneses, who died in 1437.
