The 16th century monastery was founded by the Calced Augustinian Hermits, so called because this branch was distinguished by wearing shoes. The church retains all its former splendour and is famous for the enormous 17th century gilded altarpiece. Entering through the cloister, there are decorative tile panels depicting the life of Dom Frei Aleixo de Meneses. The porch has similar 18th century panels based on the life of São Gonçalo de Lagos, Prior of the original Augustinian Monastery in Torres Vedras; his tomb is in a niche inside. The church is also remarkable for its gilt woodwork and impressive statues.
