The different nationalities who have occupied Idanha-a-Velha, from the Suevi, Visigoths, Romans and Knights Templar onwards, have left a rich historical heritage. Apart from the cathedral and the oil press (see separate entries), you can visit the Manueline 17th century pillory, the Renaissance parish church and the Roman bridge over the Pônsul River. The 13th century Templar Tower, built over the podium of a Roman forum and what is thought to be a Roman temple to Venus, is a great viewpoint. It is difficult to realise that this modest hamlet once rivalled Lisbon in wealth and importance.
