Worthy of a visit in its own right, the former Bishop’s Palace "Real Capela" (1580-1743) holds the historical archive, the richest private archive from the country. Made up of almost 200,000 pieces, chronologically placed between the 15th and 19th centuries, its contents include parchments from the 15th century, codices from the 16th century such as the Books of Mercies of ancient House of Braganza. Also from 17th to 20th centuries are documents dealing with the ducal chancellery and the ancient "almoxarifado" (tax collectors) from Minho and Trás-os-Montes to Alentejo.
