Dr Abel Salazar (1889-1946) was not only an eminent doctor and professor at the University of Porto, but also an artist, writer and philosopher. His home was bought by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1965, they restored and adapted it as a museum and built an exhibition pavilion. When it opened to the public in 1975 the foundation donated the Casa-Museu to the University of Porto. On display are Dr Salazar’s collection of paintings, sculptures, engravings and personal effects. Of particular note are his studies and works on Portuguese artists and sculptors including Henrique Pousão and Soares dos Reis.
