Whist there are several items of interest on São Brás Hill, the real attraction is the huge statue known as ‘Homem da Maça’. This is thought to be an old warrior and depicts a bearded man in cuirass with belt and kneepads, it is incomplete. Next to him is a zoomorphic statue of what appears to be a lion. There is some controversy over the origin of the Homem da Maça, some consider it to be Roman whilst others consider it 16th century from the nearby Quinta dos Bispos. The statues were moved to their current location in 1935.
