Work on the Anglican Church in Funchal commenced in 1816 and it was completed in 1822. The subscribers included King George III, the Duke of Wellington and King Leopold I of Belgium. The church appearance is most interesting and far removed from the conventional. The designer, the consul Henry Veitch, was restricted by Portuguese law, which did not allow Protestant churches to be an apparent place of worship. It is not clear whether this was the sole design criterion or whether his instincts as a freemason, or his architectural preferences, were a factor. The church is set in most attractive grounds.
