The local Hipólito Cabaço municipal museum is devoted to archaeological specimens and, whilst there is an emphasis on items relating to Alenquer, many are from sites in various parts of Portugal. The museum is named after the local archaeologist Hipólito Cabaço (1885-1970) and is centred around his collection, accumulated from the early 20th century until his death. This collection was initially acquired by the municipality in 1944 and is particularly strong in Stone Age material. The collection is huge and covers many archaeological periods from the Palaeolithic onwards. There is also a specialised library.
