The Heroes Monument commemorates the Portuguese, Spanish and English who joined forces and fought against Napoleon in the Peninsular War in Iberia from 1808 to 1814. It stands in the centre of the peaceful Mouzinho de Albuquerque (Rotunda da Boavista) gardens. Although started in 1909, it was only inaugurated in 1951, as the original sculptor Alves de Sousa died during construction and the work was completed by others. The 45 metre high pedestal is capped by a lion dominating an eagle, representing Portuguese supremacy over Napoleon’s empire.
