The small but delightful hermitage of Santa Catarina (St. Catherine) is situated in Gorjoes, a tiny Algarvean village north of Santa Barbára de Nexe. The region was settled by the Romans and Phoenicians, as is evident from the wealth of archaeological finds from the area. The village is surrounded by fields and hills covered in fruit trees and makes for a pleasant drive from Faro. The 17th century church was considerably renovated in the 19th century. Inside, the carved and gilded retable dates from the 18th century.
