The Hermitage of Our Lord of the Martyrs (Ermida do Senhor dos Mártires) is a Romanesque and Gothic church dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Situated on the western edge of Alcácer do Sal, it contains the stone sarcophagus of Diogo de Pereira who, as Grand Master of the Knights of Santiago, played a crucial role in recapturing the city from the Moors in 1217. The history of the site, however, predates even this date as it was once an Iron Age incineration necropolis.
