When Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian died in 1955 he bequeathed his estate to the Portuguese people and directed that his enormous wealth and fabulous art collection should be used for a cultural foundation bearing his name. An extensive complex, which includes this museum, was opened in 1969 and modernised in 2001. World famous, a must for a visitor to Lisbon, there are approximately 6000 exhibits from Gulbenkian’s own collection, which has been continuously increased. Located within a landscaped park (see separate entry), the museum was designed by Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid and Ruy Athouguia. .
