The Guimarães Town Hall is housed in the 16th century buildings of the Santa Clara Convent, once one of the richest in Guimarães. The typical Baroque two-storey façade is most attractive and has a statue of St Clare as a central focal point. The cloister is also two-storey, in Neo-classical style. The chapel, once richly decorated, was stripped in the 19th century and now houses the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives, which has many important local documents. Some of the gilt carvings removed from the chapel can be seen in the Alberto Sampaio Museum.
