Guimarães was chosen by Afonso Henriques as the first capital of Portugal in 1139 and its castle, his birthplace, appears on the Portuguese coat of arms. The well preserved historic city centre was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2001 and should be explored on foot by every visitor, starting at the main square, the Largo da Oliveira. In addition to the attractions detailed separately, the shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows next to the Oliveira church and the five remaining Chapels of the Stations to the Cross also merit attention. The Laranjais House and Dominicas Church are other fine monuments.
