Some historians date the origin of the city walls from the 10th century but what can be seen today dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and the reign of Kings Dom Dinis and Dom João I. A substantial section of the wall, that used to extend for more than 2,000 metres round the perimeter, and the Porta da Vila gate, one of the original eight, are the last remnants. In 1853 Queen Dona Maria II elevated Guimarães to the rank of city and, thereafter, various sections of the battlements were authorised for removal.
