Attacks by the Moors and Normans led Countess Mumadona Dias to build this castle in the 10th century. In the 12th century the parents of Portugal’s first king Afonso Henriques came to live in the stronghold and it is believed that he was born there on July 25th 1109. The field of São Mamede, where Afonso defeated his mother in battle in 1128, is adjacent to the fortress, which became known as the Founding Castle. It has a huge square keep and eight crenellated towers. The building was fully restored and declared a national monument in the 20th century.
