The town of Água de Pau became a municipality on July 28, 1515, fifteen years after its founding for carta régia of Don Manuel I. The town was destroyed in the Earthquake of 1522, which devastated the island. Reconstruction of the town began in November, 1525. It was a borough seat from 1515 to 1853. Its typical narrow streets recall Portuguese towns of bygone times and the town has an interesting urban centre of Alto do Monte Santo with many 18th century houses. The Parish church dates from the 16th century and is notable for its facade depicting the Cross of Christ.
