Furna de Frei Matias, on the west of Pico, is an impressive cave that can has tunnels stretching to a length of almost 600 m. The cooling of the lava and the leakage of volcanic gases caused the opening of caves, covered with volcanic stalactites and stalagmites, and long corridors that go deep into the earth. To walk through them, with the proper equipment and accompanied by a qualified guide, is a thrilling experience. The caverns are called furnas. The name Frei Matias comes from a legend of a hermit who supposedly once lived here.
