Adjoining the cathedral, the museum is dedicated to one of Portugal’s finest painters, Vasco Fernandes (1475-1542), known as Grão Vasco, who lived in Viseu for most of his life. The museum opened in 1916 in the restored 16th century former bishops’ palace. The Viseu School of painters are famed for their naturalism and were greatly influenced by the Flemish masters. Highlights of the works on display are the fourteen panel Life of Christ, the Adoration of the Magi with its Brazilian Indian amongst those paying homage, St. Peter Enthroned and a Last Supper, the latter by Gaspar Vaz.
