The Celeiro de São Francisco (Granary of St. Francis) is an octagonal structure from the 18th century, built within the garden of one of Faro’s nobility as somewhere to take shelter from the heat. The representations in mortarwork are of Hercules and the giant Adamastor, a Greek god described in verse by the well-travelled poet Luís de Camões in 1572. The fact these mythical figures adorn two sides of the façade of something named for a religious saint is a curious example of the tastes of the age. The arms of the nobleman on whose orders the building was erected are visible over the door.
