This 16th century granite church was sponsored by King D.João II and the Counts of Vimioso. It is the work of Miguel de Arruda and Nicolau Chanterene and one of the first Renaissance buildings in Portugal. Its eye-catching façade has huge nude classical figures over the columns, each group supporting a sphere with a flame. These are sometimes compared with the work of Michelangelo. In 1595 the poetess Públia Hortência de Castro, from Vila Viçosa, was buried in the cloisters. The interior, which is not open to the public, is extremely plain.
