This magnificent statue was built to honour St Gonzalo of Lagos. Born around 1360, Gonzalo was the son of a fisherman and entered the Augustinian order when he was 20, becoming an eminent theologian and gifted artist. Gonzalo loved giving religious instruction to those with little formal education. It is said that when he was Prior of the monastery in Torres Vedras, the community was so poor that it could not buy enough food for its members. The local Bishop provided food, which Gonzalo would carry home on his back. When the Bishop discovered this, he donated money instead of heavy groceries.
