Situated about 8 km east of Porto, the town of Gondomar is famous for the work of its goldsmiths. The tradition is many centuries old and is believed by some to date back as far as the Visigoths and Celts. Although the gold mines which were located in this region were closed over two centuries ago, the traditional skills lived on. The artistic influence of the Moors is apparent in the delicate and complex designs in gold and silver filigree. The ornate regional costumes worn by the girls of the Minho are enhanced by the original hand-made jewellery from Gondomar.
