Located in a wooded area close to the Ovelha River and about 6 km southeast of Amarante, the Gondar Church was once part of a Benedictine monastery. The foundation date is still unknown, although one school of thought is that it is from the second half of the 15th century, based on an image of the Virgin sculpted around 1460. The architectural style suggests the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Notable features are the impressive main portal and the bell tower seen on the right hand side.
