The Glass Museum is housed in the neo-classical 18th century Palácio Stephens, the former home of William Stephens. He established Marinha Grande’s glass manufacturing industry in the middle of the 18th century, with a loan from the Marquês de Pombal and permission to use wood from the local pine forests as fuel. The museum’s collection includes artistic windows, drinking glasses, vases and other crystal objects as well as 17th to 20th century pieces from other glass centres. A portion of the factory is recreated, together with a glass-blower’s workshop. There are books and other documents related to the history of glass in Portugal.
