Located on a hilltop at a height of 367 metres, a few kilometres west of Panela, is Germanelo Castle. It was built in 1142 by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, during the Christian Reconquest period as part of the defences of the Montego River against the Moors. It is thought to have been the site of a Roman fort and the wall that is seen today was rebuilt to the original plans. There is a magnificent view over the Rabaçal valley landscape.
