This museum houses unusual items from the former Portuguese colonies and is located in the Geographical Society building near the Campo Grande and Rossio. The main museum area is the fine Sala Portugal. On display is the original monument, in the form of a stone pillar, erected to confirm Portuguese sovereignty in August 1482 by Diogo Cão, when he arrived with his caravels at the mouth of the Congo. There are coiffure headrests from Angola and circumcision masks from Guinea Bissau, claimed by the Portuguese in 1446. Other items of interest include snake spears and musical instruments.
