The Garcia de Orta Gardens in Nations Park are named after the distinguished 16th century doctor and botanist, who lived in India for thirty years. They consist of six landscaped areas along the Tagus River presenting the ecosystems of various parts of the world explored by the Portuguese during the Age of Discovery. In a total area of about 2,500 square metres, the gardens contain some 2,300 plants and more than 400 species. Areas covered include Timor, Macao, Goa, Cape Verde, São Tomé, Angola, Madeira and the Azores.
