Located about 5 kilometres northeast of Valença do Minho, on the N101, is the Benedictine Convent of Ganfei. It was rebuilt in the 11th century in Romanesque style by a French knight and priest Ganfei (or Ganfried). It is thought that the original buildings may have been from the 7th century but were destroyed by the Moors around 1000. The façade of the church, the chancel and the convent buildings were subject to extensive reconstruction in the 17th and 18th centuries. The convent retains Romanesque features, including ornamental animal and plant motifs and the remains of medieval frescoes.
